I enrolled in a public sculpture class in the Spring of 2017 at Pacific Lutheran University. I became a student after retiring from a career as an Army aviation mechanic as part of a process to develop a new role for my life. When I was a soldier I had been assigned to seven locations including two overseas bases, and two combat tours. Home became wherever my wife was located even though we were often separated for months at a time. Our last military posting was Joint Base Lewis McChord, and the Puget Sound became our home.
Art at PLU became a pathway to process, and discuss my feelings of loss, betrayal, and abandonment of my fellow soldiers, and friends as I no longer serve alongside them. The message that I attempt to convey through art is that it is honorable to be at home, and to live your life as you wish.
